While the study focused on autistic adults rather than school-aged pupils, and every person’s experience is different, it does reinforce that for SEND settings, strong fragrances and unnecessary chemical fumes are worth avoiding wherever possible.

Facilities managers are increasingly looking towards sensory-neutral cleaning products and practices. The main shift is towards unscented, fragrance-free products that still meet the required hygiene standards, including EN 1276 and EN 14476.
